What we do

The Dalhousie Law Alumni Association (DLAA) is an incorporated non-profit society that operates across Canada and the World to provide support and resources to the Schulich School of Law by maintaining close ties and relationships between our alumni and the law achool.

Meetings and minutes:

The DLAA is governed by our Memorandum of Association and By-Laws.

The DLAA holds regular board meetings on a periodic basis in Halifax. We also hold our Annual General Meeting each year, at which the nominating committee puts forward the names of directors for approval and election by members of the society.

Committees:

The following committee has been formed to improve operations of the society:

Fundraising

DLAA's mandate does not include direct fundraising activities. Solicitations for donations and alumni giving are planned and implemented by Dalhousie University External Relations Office.

However, DLAA has an important role to play in maintaining close ties between alumni and the law school across Canada and the World, that should strengthen fundraising efforts and results.

Hearsay:

Our traditional method of maintaining communication with alumni has been through publication of Hearsay - The Schulich School of Law Alumni Magazine.

Hearsay 1999           Hearsay 2001

As a result of fiscal concerns, the Communications Committee is currently evaluating the use of other communication tools, such as e-mail newsletters and the development of this web-site, as ways for DLAA to maintain and improve its communications and relationships with alumni.

If you have any comments or suggestions for us on how we can better communicate with you, please send us your thoughts by e-mail!

Awards:

DLAA sponsors both the Alumni Teaching Award and the Weldon Award for Unselfish Public Service, both of which are awarded each year to a deserving recipient.

Branch meetings and events:

DLAA maintains branches in every Province and Territory across Canada.

Strengthening our contact and relationships with branches is a priority for DLAA, and we are looking for opportunities to hold social and networking events across Canada, particularly when the Dean of Law is travelling.

If you would like to organize a branch event or have suggestions on what we can do in your area to strengthen ties with the law school, please contact us!
