General information
All students must ensure they are properly registered and are in compliance with the academic requirements and regulations for the faculty, including being registered for the required number of credits. The online banner registration system is not designed to pick up on many kinds of registration errors, such as registering for too many paper courses, or not enough/too many credits.
Please note that after the add/drop date has passed and course selections are finalized, every student registration is manually audited each term. Courses cannot be added after the add/drop date, and courses can only be dropped with a W. If you have not corrected your registration by the add/drop date to ensure you are complying with faculty requirements, this may affect your ability to advance or to graduate.
Please see the academic calendar and the course selection materials for the law school’s academic requirements. A few of the most salient of them are included here as a reminder. Students are deemed to be aware of all faculty regulations and program requirements.
· No Time Conflicts. Students may not register for courses that conflict on the schedule in terms of time, even if the overlap is only half an hour.
· At Least One Paper Course per Year and Not More Than Two. Students must take at least one paper course in each of second and third year. Students may take two paper courses in each of second and third year, but not more than two paper courses in one year. It is permissible to take two paper courses in one term.
· Allowable Credit Ranges. Full time LL.B. students must take 29-31 credits per year (12-17 credits per term for third year students, and 12.5 - 17.5 credits per term for second year students due to the compulsory moot). You must ensure you are not registered for too many or too few credits. Registering for too few credits will affect your ability to advance or graduate; registering for too many will result in your being required to drop a course with a W (which may in turn result in your not having enough credits to advance). **Please note combined degree students and part time students have different requirements which can be found in the calendar.
· Only One Course Permitted With The Dal Legal Aid Clinic Students may not take more than one course at the same time (in the same term) as the Legal Aid Clinic.
· Competitive Moots. Students are permitted to participate in only one competitive moot during their LL.B. studies.
· Prerequisites. Students may only register for courses for which they have the stated prerequisites or co-requisites. Please see the course selection materials online for a complete list of pre- and co-requisites for courses offered this year: http://law.dal.ca/Current_Students/Course_Selection_Materials/
Please note:
Ø A prerequisite must successfully be completed prior to commencing the course in question (i.e. either in the previous year or the previous term). If you do not have the necessary prerequisite, you must not register for the course in question.
Ø A co-requisite must either successfully be completed prior to commencing the course in question OR must be, at the very least, taken concurrently with the course in question (i.e in the same term, not in a later term). In this situation, unless you have already completed the course or are registered for it in the same term, you must not register for the course in question.
- Add/Drop Dates. Fall term and full year course selections must be complete by the add/drop date September 18, 2011. Changes for Winter term courses may not be made after January 15, 2012. The online system will not accept any changes after these dates.
Students must apply in writing for some courses, placements, and moots. Please direct these applications to the professor involved with the specific course (noted on the Revised List of Courses). You should not sign up online for these courses unless you have been through the selection process, and have been chosen to participate. Instructions for applying are listed in the course description in the calendar.
Required Courses
Please remember to sign up online for your compulsory courses first. The registration system requires registration in compulsory courses first, before it will permit students to register for electives. (For the purposes of the Banner online registration system, the major paper course is considered to be an elective.)
Law school program requirements are:
SECOND YEAR:
THIRD YEAR:
-
Professional Responsibility (including tutorial)
-
Between 29-31 credit hours (12 to 17 credits per term)
-
At least one course designated as a major paper course
Waitlists
When a class reaches the maximum enrolment online that class will be closed for registration, but students may be able to sign on to the waitlist if there is room. Most classes have a waitlist maximum capacity of 10. Please note that third year students take priority on waitlists, regardless of the timing of their sign-up. When positions become available in those classes with waitlists, time-limited offers will be made by email to those students through the Assistant Dean’s office. Please do not contact professors directly about your position on a waitlist. Waitlists are not administered by individual professors.
Summer Term Legal Aid Clinic – Information about Student Loans and Credits
Please note the following student loan information from the Registrar’ Office:
The Canada/Provincial Student Loan program requires students to maintain registration in a minimum of 60% of a full-time course load in each term of study. Law students who complete the Dalhousie Legal Aid Clinic during the summer and who do not take at least 60% of a full course load in each of the following academic terms to complete their degree do not meet the Canada/Provincial Student Loan requirements. These students are only eligible to receive a student loan for the one term in which they have a minimum of 60% enrolment. The practical effect is: after completing the Summer Clinic (13 credits) third year students presumptively require only 16 credits, which could be completed in the Fall term. If those students wish to take those credits over the Fall and Winter terms, and receive student loan approval, they must take at least 9 credits (60%) in each term. The TOTAL upper limit is 20 extra credits, that is, 9 in one term and up to 11 in the other.
