Biography:
Professor Aldo Chircop (JSD, 1988) is a full professor of law and specialist in international and comparative marine and environmental law and policy. Specific topics of current research and teaching interest include Arctic policy and marine transportation, international law of the sea, maritime zone legislation, shipping and international maritime law, integrated coastal management, comparative coastal law and marine protected seas.
Dr. Chircop’s work experience has included directorships of the International Ocean Institute and the Mediterranean Institute in Malta. While in Malta, he was also a member of that country's delegation to the Preparatory Commission for the Law of the Sea. In 2004-2005 Dr. Chircop was Canadian Chair in Marine Environment Protection at the IMO’s World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden. Dr. Chircop has extensive development experience in his areas of expertise in Europe, Southeast Asia, East Africa, Caribbean, Mediterranean and South Pacific. His work experience has included numerous international organizations including Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, International Maritime Organization, International Seabed Authority, United Nations Environment Programme and United Nations Industrial Development Programme.
Dr. Chircop’s is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, Coastal Zone Canada Association, Canadian Maritime Law Association and Marine Technology Society. Dr. Chircop is also a Research Associate for the European Union Centre of Excellence (EUCE).
Dr. Chircop has extensive research funding experience and has published widely both individually and in collective works and periodicals. His most recent books include: The Future of Ocean Regime-Building: Essays in Tribute to Douglas M. Johnston (co-edited with Ted L. McDorman and Susan Rolston; Nijhoff, 2009); Understanding and Strengthening European Union-Canada Relations in Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance (co-edited with Timo Koivurova, Erik Franckx, Erik J. Molenaar, David L. VanderZwaag; University of Lapland, 2009); Places of Refuge for Ships: Emerging Environmental Concerns of a Maritime Custom (co-edited with Olof Linden; Nijhoff, 2006); and Maritime Law (co-authored with Edgar Gold and Hugh Kindred; Irwin Law, 2003). He is also Co-editor of the Ocean Yearbook since volume 13 (currently at volume 25) and is on the editorial board of the WMU Journal of Maritime Affairs.
Maritime Law was the recipient of the Walter Owen Book Prize in 2005. Dr. Chircop is also recipient of the Dalhousie Faculty of Graduate Studies Distinguished Service Award and the Dalhousie Students’ Union Teaching Excellence Award for the Faculty of Law.
