Frequently Asked Questions
Can you do an LLM without an LLB?
No. Applicants for admission to the LLM programme should hold a first degree in law equivalent to the Dalhousie LLB, passed with at least a “B” average (or Upper Second Class Honours).
Can you practice law with an LLM?
In order to practice law in Canada or elsewhere, candidates must fulfill the requirements of local governing bodies and the National Committee on Accreditation.
Is there a part-time program?
Yes.
How can I get an application package?
You can apply online or download application forms via the Registrar's Office. Alternatively, if you send your mailing address to law.graduate.studies@dal.ca an application package will be mailed to you.
What is the application deadline?
The application deadline is January 31. Please be sure that all supporting documentation is received in time.
Is there an application fee?
Yes, there is a $70 CDN application fee. Payment can be made by credit card, or by cheque, money order or bank draft payable (in Canadian funds) to 'Dalhousie University'. Please return your payment with Part A of the application form to the Registrar's Office.
Is it possible to get a waiver?
An application fee waiver may be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Do I need to take any exams to do a LLM or JSD (LSAT, GRE, TOEFL, etc...)?
Candidates from outside Canada whose native language is other than English will be required to pass an English language proficiency test (TOEFL 600/250/100 minimum). See minimum proficiency standards.
Do I need to have my transcripts translated if they're not in English or French?
Yes.
Is funding available?
Yes, for highly qualified applications. See Financial Matters
How many applications do you get each year?
75 – 100
How many people are accepted?
There is a maximum of 15 places for the LLM programme and 3 for the JSD programme.
When are decisions made?
Admissions decisions are made from February – June.
When are accepted students notified?
Applicants will be notified by mail as soon as possible once a decision has been made.
Are there interviews?
Not normally.
