Canadian Labour Arbitration Competition

On Sunday, January 27, Dal Law students Jody Brown and Michelle McCann  took first place at the Canadian Labour Arbitration Competition in Toronto.  They were competing against teams from seven other Canadian Law Schools.  On Saturday, Jody and Michelle mooted against Queens University in the morning and University of Calgary in the afternoon.  They were then selected for the final moot against Queens on Sunday, at the conclusion of which they were presented with the Mathews Dinsdale & Clark Trophy.  In this competition, students appear at the premises of the Ontario Labour Relations Board to moot before three person panels made up of seasoned arbitrators and labour lawyers. In the final moot, the panel was composed of the Chairs of the Canada Industrial Relations Board and the Ontario Labour Relations Board and Arbitrator Innis Christie.

Team coaches, Eric Slone and Lorraine Lafferty were impressed with the preparation and solid performance of these future labour lawyers.  They note that in the ten year history of this national competition, Dalhousie Law School has now brought the trophy home three times –  the only law school to have achieved this distinction.

Congratulations to Jody and Michelle, national winners for 2008!
