Dalhousie Wins McKelvey Cup

Four students from Dalhousie Law School participated in the McKelvey Cup February 22-23rd.  The McKelvey Cup is the regional trial competition for the Sopinka Cup.  Two teams from each of Dal,  UNB and the the University of Moncton compete.  The competition requires each team to act as counsel for a criminal trial, in this case prosecuting or defending a charge of manslaughter.

The Dalhousie Crown team, of Mat Brechtel and Conor Dooley placed first, defeating the other five teams and winning the McKelvey Cup.  As a result, they will travel to Ottawa for the National Sopinka Cup in mid-March.  In addition to the team prize, Mat also won awards for the best cross examination and the best closing.

When they get to Ottawa, Mat and Conor will do the other side of the problem, representing the defence.  The Sopinka Cup is sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers while the regional competition is sponsored by Stewart McKelvey.  Our thanks to the sponsors for their continuing generosity.

The Dalhousie defence team, of David Dow and Trevor McGuigan faced off against a team from UNB, winning their trial.  They acquitted themselves well on the weekend, displaying a good knowledge of the problem and the required skills.

Congratulations to all four of our mooters for their strong performance.
