Trailer Park Boys Producer Comes to Dalhousie
On October 25, 2007, Barrie Dunn (LL.B.’98), an award-winning producer with over 20 years’ experience, visited the law school to speak to the Dalhousie Sports and Entertainment Law Society (DSELS) about entertainment law in Atlantic Canada.
The graduate of Dalhousie Law School is probably most well known for his role as executive producer of the ground breaking television show, Trailer Park Boys, but his experience in the industry also include acting, writing and directing.
Dunn spoke to students about the realities of working in television during a time when technology is evolving at a much greater speed than the surrounding areas of law. He discussed dealing with the legal uncertainty in the area of content made for cell phones, producing content specifically for the Internet, and the need to understand multiple areas of law. “Entertainment law is an umbrella term to cover a variety of areas of the law,” said Dunn. “A lot of this type of practice is about contract law. You have to have a strong knowledge of copyright law and technology, but the majority is contract based.”
In addition to continuing his role as executive producer of the Trailer Park Boys, Dunn is currently a practicing lawyer at McInnes Cooper in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
